For most of us, our busy, saturated lives leave little space for nature. The artists who have lived and worked in West Cornwall often speak of the sea and its ever-changing colour from slate grey to plum to deep ink blue and moss. To her friend, the critic Herbert Read, Hepworth once wrote: “Imagine the critic having to climb a hill, or walk a mile through a forest … to see a sculpture.” Hepworth loved her sculptures to be seen outside of the museum, reacting to the light and the seasons.

One of the most famous faces in the world Frida Kahlo (born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican painter whose self-portraits beautifully and honestly expressed the female form in a new way.  >> Self-taught, Kahlo created at least 140 paintings, as well as dozens of drawings and studies. The great artist died in 1954 and was cremated, while an autopsy was never done, it was determined that her official cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. Kahlo and her art has been immortalized in Mexican culture and feminist discourse, so we at BUST are glad to celebrate her art work.
