A Seattle Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man on Monday afternoon – all over an altercation over unpaid Metro fare.
The Seattle Police Department says three Metro Transit Fare Enforcement Officers stopped three men to check whether they had paid their fare. One of the men did not have proof of payment and all three men were asked to exit the station.
The Fare Enforcement Officers called for backup from the King County Sheriff’s office who then questioned the three men.
According to SPD, one of the men pulled a handgun and the deputy fatally shot him.
“This incident is primarily about a man pulling a handgun on a King County Sheriff’s deputy, and that deputy responding with force – in this case lethal force,” Seattle Police Department Sgt. Sean Whitcomb told reporters.
That’s not how witness Marquez Davis saw it.
Davis told Fox, “The sheriff reached around the security guard, who had the man up against the glass of the [transit] shelter… and pulled out his gun and shot the man point-blank range three times in the abdomen.
Don’t get me wrong, the man was resisting,” but added that there were four law enforcement agents and just one suspect.
The Seattle Police Department is investigating the shooting.
In a related incident, as two officers were responding to the shooting, their patrol car collided with another car and sent both officers and two civilians to Harborview Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
